These boardshorts by Waterlust were inspired by the patterns found on the tiger shark. Tiger sharks get their name from the dark vertical bars that cover the side of their bodies. The bars are more noticeable in juveniles and fade slightly as an individual reaches adulthood. Tiger sharks are aggressive predators and are famous for eating just about anything they can find. The stomach contents of captured tiger sharks have included animals such as stingrays, sea snakes, seals, birds, squids and even license plates and old tires!

Tiger sharks are classified as near threatened, according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. While not classified as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered, they are close and populations are still decreasing. There is a lack of knowledge and awareness about marine ecology and conservation in relation to shark species. Globally, there are few engaging science education opportunities to inspire youth to adopt conservation attitudes and behaviours that can help us maintain healthy oceans.

Waterlust will donate 10% of profits from the sales of these boardshorts to the Shark Research and Conservation Program (SRC) at the University of Miami, which will help fund important research focused on the ecology, movement and conservation of tiger sharks as well as other local shark species. The SRC is also focuses on community outreach. They offer virtual research experiences and actually take school-children on research boats to survey, sample, tag and study sharks!
