The Georgia Strait Alliance (GSA) is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the protection and restoration of the marine environment and promoting the sustainability of the Strait of Georgia (along the West coast of British Columbia, Canada), its adjoining waters and communities.
Who is the GSA?
GSA was founded in 1990 by a group of citizens concerned about the increased pollution and damage to the marine habitat of the Strait of Georgia. They have become an effective voice through collaborative work with individuals, businesses and governments on topics such as species at risk and marine habitat protection in the Strait and Fraser River, sewage treatment, open net-cage salmon farming, fossil fuel transport and water pollution by developing long term, science-based solutions.
Current GSA Programs
This program empowers individuals to take an active role in conservation through outreach and public education to bring awareness to the importance of keeping the Georgia Strait healthy.
Ensuring that the region’s most threatened marine species and their habitats are protected is the focus of this program. This is done through the continued leadership on the implementation of recovery and protection efforts that impact endangered Southern Resident orcas. A specific focus is on contaminated-related threats, monitoring and enforcement.
Clean Marine BC
An awareness and action program that works with recreational boaters and marina operators to reduce their impact on the marine environment in areas such as fuel and oil spills and emissions, waste disposal, toxic paints and maintenance products, spread of aquatic invasive species and sewage and greywater discharges.
The focus of the energy program is to improve oil spill prevention and response in the Strait and to address climate change.
GSA knows that a healthy and protected marine environment is best for the community, economy and wildlife and sees a future where the air and water is clean for all the living things in their stunning region.
We envision this same future, which is why GSA is a partner in Our Giving Program.
