Humpback whales are found in every ocean in the world. Their common name of “humpback” comes from the small hump in front of their dorsal fin. They are most known for their beautiful songs, which are the most complex in the animal kingdom and can travel for great distances. Researchers believe that some of the songs can travel 10,000 miles! The songs often continue for hours and are made up of different sequences of moans, howls, cries and other noises. Males are the only ones who sing, which continues to stump researchers.

Humpback whales were hunted for centuries and were on the brink of extinction before the 1985 ban on commercial whaling. They were hunted for their meat and primarily blubber. The blubber was converted into oil used in lamps and for lubrication.

Fortunately, the plan to save the humpback whales has succeeded. They are now listed as least concerned on the IUCN Red List. That is, there is a relatively low risk of extinction. The biggest threats to humpback whales today are entanglement in fishing gear, collisions with ships and underwater noise pollution, which interferes with their ability to communicate with potential mates, group members and offspring.

Who is Rachel Brooks?

Rachel Brooks is a UK based artist, wildlife guide and photographer. She has always loved drawing and painting, but set it aside to pursue a university degree in Zoology. After her graduation, she set off to explore the world and was inspired to pick up her camera and paints while visiting India. In the years that followed, she continued traveling and became a Scuba Diving Instructor, where she eventually crossed paths with me, the founder of Divine Depth. A lot of her creations have been inspired by her time as an instructor, from swimming with whale sharks in the Ningaloo reef in Australia to the small and weird critters found off a remote island in Indonesia. After 5 years on the road, she returned home to the UK and established Rachel Brooks Art. She now does a … FISHTASTIC… job at bringing the ocean into our own houses!
