While freediving off the coast of Western Australia, Rachel Brooks Art was lucky to come across this playful and curious sea lion, often dubbed as a dog of the sea, and was able to snag a shot to create this beautiful sea lion print!

The Australian sea lion is a type of seal that is only native the remote areas of the South and Western Australia coastlines and islands. They typically live for 8 to 9 years with breeding cycles once every 18 months. There are 66 known breeding colonies in Australia and each colony is genetically distinct from next. Sadly, this inquisitive species is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Historically hunted for their fur, the biggest threat to Australian sea lion colonies now are gillnets. A gillnet is a wall of netting that hangs in the water column typically used by commercial fisheries to capture sharks for the ‘flake’ and chip market in Australia. Unfortunately, sea lions also get entangled in the nets and drown.

To protect sea lion colonies, an organization known as the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) have worked with government, scientists and the fishing industry, as well as rallying the support of the Australian public, to establish sea lion protection zones around breeding colonies where no fishing with gillnets is allowed.

Who is Rachel Brooks?

Rachel Brooks is a UK based artist, wildlife guide and photographer. She has always loved drawing and painting, but set it aside to pursue a university degree in Zoology. After her graduation, she set off to explore the world and was inspired to pick up her camera and paints while visiting India. In the years that followed, she continued traveling and became a Scuba Diving Instructor, where she eventually crossed paths with me, the founder of Divine Depth. A lot of her creations have been inspired by her time as an instructor, from swimming with whale sharks in the Ningaloo reef in Australia to the small and weird critters found off a remote island in Indonesia. After 5 years on the road, she returned home to the UK and established Rachel Brooks Art. She now does a … FISHTASTIC… job at bringing the ocean into our own houses!
